Fun Facts: Pickard China, founded in Chicago in 1893 by Wilder Austin Pickard, is renowned for its high-quality hand-decorated porcelain. Pickard pieces were often hand-painted or decorated by skilled artists, and many gold-etched items were signed, adding to their collectible value.
The "Rose and Daisy" pattern, introduced around 1912, is one of Pickard's most enduring, sometimes rendered in full color but also in etched gold versions for a more opulent look. The backstamps show the Pickard coat of arms logo (a heraldic design often featuring a lion or similar motif), along with "PICKARD DECORATED IN U.S.A." on both pieces and "JAPAN" on the creamer. This indicates that the porcelain blanks were imported from Japan (likely Noritake or similar), and the decoration was applied in the United States at Pickard's studio in Chicago. Pickard began using Japanese blanks during World War I (around 1915-1918) when European imports were disrupted, and continued this practice until they started producing their own blanks in 1930. The specific coat of arms mark (etched in gold) was used from 1925 to 1930.
