Vintage hand-carved and hand-painted solid wood greenhead mallard (drake) duck decoy with inset glass eye. This decorative folk-art piece features a rich green head, warm reddish-brown body showing natural wood grain under a smooth polished finish, and a reddish-orange bill. Measures approximately 16 inches in length.

Ideal for cabin, lake house, farmhouse, or rustic home décor—perfect on a mantel, shelf, or as part of a waterfowl collection. Wooden duck decoys originated as functional hunting tools used by Native Americans (earliest known examples are over 2,000 years old, made of reeds and feathers). European settlers adapted the idea into carved wooden birds. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, both individual carvers (e.g., Elmer Crowell) and factories (most famously Mason’s Decoy Factory in Detroit, 1896–1924, plus others like Dodge, Petersen, Hays/Gundelfinger in Missouri, etc.) produced thousands of working decoys with glass or tack eyes. After WWII, plastic and other materials largely replaced wood for hunting, and many carvers shifted to decorative pieces for collectors and home décor. Unsigned solid-wood greenhead mallard carvings like yours are common examples of that later decorative tradition—attractive folk-art objects rather than identified factory working decoys.
