Pfaltzgraff is one of the oldest pottery companies in the United States, commonly dated to 1811 in York County, Pennsylvania, when the Pfaltzgraff family (German immigrant potters) began producing earthenware and stoneware on their homestead. The formal company partnership formed in 1889 (George and Henry Pfaltzgraff), with a factory in 1894. It grew into a major American dinnerware maker known for durable stoneware patterns (Yorktowne, Winterberry, etc.). The family-owned business was sold to Lifetime Brands in 2005; manufacturing later shifted in part overseas, but the brand continues.
