Fun Facts: The style is instantly recognizable: hand-painted on a glossy black background with bold yellow/gold flowers (daisy-like with red centers), clusters of bright red berries, green leaves, and yellow trim accents. This traditional “background technique” of Khokhloma, where the vibrant floral and berry motifs (often rowan or strawberry-inspired) stand out against the dark lacquer. The wood is typically linden or birch, carved, primed, and finished with multiple layers of protective lacquer for that shiny, durable surface. No real gold or gold paint is used! Artisans rub the wood with linseed oil and powdered aluminum or tin, paint with heat-resistant oil colors, then coat in lacquer and bake at high temperature. This creates the warm golden-yellow glow under the lacquer.
